Meet Kwesi: An Angels Jounery

Kwesi’s Journey: An Angel's Story

Kwesi Bernard Nsafoah-Lane was a miracle from the start. Born prematurely on September 4, 2005, weighing just 4lbs 8oz, his survival beyond the first 24 hours was uncertain. Despite being a puzzle to genetic doctors, Kwesi defied every obstacle with a resilience that inspired all around him.

His mother, a strong woman of faith, had prayed for a son and the journey that followed tested her in ways she never imagined. From a risky amniocentesis to limited movements in the womb, the signs were worrying. The decision to induce labor was critical in giving Kwesi a fighting chance.

After a tense birth where he was "put back together like a puzzle," Kwesi spent a month and a half in NICU, showing his mother the true meaning of life with his unyielding spirit and bright smile.

The challenges were far from over. Kwesi's first Thanksgiving at home was a celebration of life, but it was also the beginning of a new ordeal with G-Tube feedings. In December, a peaceful night turned into a mother's nightmare as Kwesi went into cardiac arrest. His mother's quick response and the paramedics' efforts kept him alive.

Hospitalized over Christmas, Kwesi was equipped with a tracheostomy and a CPAP machine, later requiring round-the-clock oxygen. The family learned to care for his new needs, with hope and smiles as their constant companions.

Yet, heartache was looming. On December 16, 2012, Kwesi passed away. For six years, his mother harbored guilt and pain, masking them behind laughter and strength for her family.

But on December 16, 2018, she allowed herself to grieve, to accept that some things are beyond our control, and that sometimes the red lights in life are there for a reason. In her daughters' words and her own reflections, she found a deeper understanding of her journey with Kwesi – a journey of an angel who taught her about life, love, and the strength of the human spirit.
